Hattiesburg, Miss. -

"Everyone can be great because everybody can serve."

- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Southern Miss students partnered with organizations across Hattiesburg for a day of service on Monday.

The Center for Community Engagement helped pair students with volunteering events in person and virtually.

In person volunteer projects included:

- Providing masks and hand sanitizer to families at Hawkins Elementary School

- Serving food and preparing for a community yard sale with Christian Services

- Moving inventory at The Field House Thrift Store for the Homeless

- Landscaping and Playground clean-up at Aldersgate After School Mission

Virtual projects included:

- Writing letters to elderly members of the community as a part of the Letters Against Isolation campaign.

- Reading stories to children for an online Zoom Reading Rainbow.

Students not only voiced their support for their community, but backed it up with action today at these events.
