The Pearl River is continuing to flood after several days of hard rainfall. Columbia and other cities south of Jackson should prepare to see the river rising in their areas as the water moves.

The Pearl river is currently at 24 feet in Columbia and the town has already seen water rising onto properties in low-lying areas. The National Weather Service says that the river is supposed to crest at 25 feet on Sunday, but officials do not expect the water to recede until mid-march, as steady rainfall is expected to continue.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation has closed several roads in Columbia that are already covered in water including HWY 587, Henry Road, and Old 35 South.
Mayor Mckenzie urges residents to prepare to make alternate arrangements to work or school if their areas become flooded. He says that residents in flood zones should have a plan of safety, and be ready to get out and stay somewhere else for a while if the water rises around their properties and available access roads.

Turn around, don't drown. According to FEMA, just six inches of water can sweep away most passenger cars. If you see water on the roadways, find another route.
The Columbia Civil Defense office is providing sand bags for residents to help steer water away from their homes.
